The City of Langley is nestled amid the primarily rural Township - the two became separate entities in 1955. Within the Township are various distinct areas, each with its own unique character. Langley Living focuses on the areas of North Langley - Fort Langley and Walnut Grove. Current population is estimated at 24,000 (as at the last census, in 1996, was 22,523). Fort Langley Fort Langley was the first capital of the province of British Columbia. Its historical significance is reflected in its museums, including the Fort itself (a National Historic Site), the Langley Centennial Museum and the Canadian Pacific Railway station. ; "The Village", as it is called by residents, is now home to over 2500 residents and eighty businesses, including a mix of services and retail stores, many galleries, restaurants and unique small businesses. Natural boundaries, including the Fraser and Salmon Rivers, and agricultural lands, prevent the expansion of this small and close-knit community. Residents take a strong and active interest in matters that affect their area. Those interested in area history will enjoy a walk through the Fort Langley cemetary. Many of the early settlers and their families are buried here, their headstones bearing names that are familiar from street signs, businesses and landmarks throughout the area. Visit the Fort Langley website for information on "the Village" and local area history, culture, events and more. Walnut Grove Walnut Grove is a much larger and newer community of 27,000 residents, and still growing. It is characterized by many new developments of quality, affordable homes, from single family detached to innovative townhouse complexes. Recreational facilities include the Walnut Grove Community Centre and Aquatic Facility, and neighbouring skateboard park, Walnut Grove Community Park, Derby Reach Regional Park, and several neighbourhood parks. Several commercial areas offer a variety of stores and services, including fitness clubs and a major movie theatre complex. Medical, dental, physiotherapy and veterinary clinics are close to home, as are restaurants, financial services, garden centres and movie rentals. |
