Fort Langley
Fort Langley is located on the south side of the Bedford Channel, separated from the main flow of the Fraser River by McMillan Island. As the first capital of the Crown Colony of British Columbia, its historical significance is reflected in its museums, including the fort itself (a National Historic Site), the Langley Centennial Museum, BC Farm Machinery Museum and the Canadian Pacific Railway station.

"The Village", as it is called by local folk, is home to about 2700 residents and eighty businesses, including a mix of services and retail stores, many galleries, restaurants and unique small businesses. Natural boundaries, including the Fraser and Salmon Rivers, and agricultural lands, prevent the expansion of this small and close-knit community. Residents take a strong and active interest in matters that affect their area: there are numerous societies at work all the time preserving our history and heritage buildings, keeping an eagle eye on development plans, promoting local artists and businesses, planning special events, encouraging citizens to get involved and visitors to stay a little longer.

Parents have a choice of two schools in Fort Langley for their younger children - Fort Langley Elementary and Langley Fine Arts School. Both offer excellent education and great community involvement. Secondary students can attend Langley Fine Arts (LFAS) or travel to neighbouring Walnut Grove Secondary (WGS). LFAS is an alternative program public school with heavy emphasis on the arts. Students begin with exposure to drama, music, visual arts and dance (and writing in the higher grades), and narrow their program as they progress, eventually majoring in the discipline of their choice. The school facilities include the Chief Sepass Theatre and the Mary Pratt Gallery. WGS is a larger, more traditional secondary school, with facilities that will appeal to students with a strong interest in athletics. |
